WINNING THE WAR OF WORDS. Home Series  01.08.15

  • Bad News Always Sounds More Powerful Than Good News.
  • You Protect Your Life When You Protect Your Ears.
  • You’ll Never Rise Higher Than The Words You Allow To Dominate You.
  • Words Are The Most Common Vehicle Used To Carry Negativity, Pain, Fear, And Discouragement.

Nehemiah 4:1-6

1Now it came about that when Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became furious and very angry and mocked the Jews.

2And he spoke in the presence of his brothers and the wealthy men of Samaria and said,

“What are these feeble Jews doing?  Are they going to restore it for themselves?  Can they offer sacrifices?  Can they finish in a day?

Can they revive the stones from the dusty rubble even the burned ones?”

3Now Tobiah the Ammonite was near him and he said,

“Even what they are building – if a fox should jump on it, he would break their stone wall down!”

4Hear, O our God, how we are despised!  Return their reproach on their own heads and give them up for plunder in a land of captivity.

5Do not forgive their iniquity and let not their sin be blotted out before Thee, FOR THEY HAVE DEMORALIZED THE BUILDERS.

6So we built the wall and the whole wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.

Demoralize – Def: Verb.

1. To deprive a person or persons of spirit, courage, physical energy, or discipline.

2. To throw a person or persons into disorder or confusion.

BUILDING A WALL AGAINST ENEMY WORDS:

  1. Learn To Recognize Ungodly Ridicule And Criticism Of Yourself And Those You Love.
  2. Stop And Humbly Say: “That Sounds Like Ridicule And Criticism To Me”   If Necessary, Interrupt The Person.
  3. Privately Pray And Claim Your Right To The Unbridled Blessing And Unconditional Love Of God.
  4. Realize What Real Feelings Inside Your Heart Their Words Have Activated.    Remember: “Your Rejection Of Me is Only Harmful To Me If It Awakens Within Me My Rejection Of Myself”
  5. Quote Memorized Scripture. Psalm 68:19, 55:12  Replace The Pre-Recorded Tapes In Your Head With God’s Word.
  6. Use Your Own Mouth To Equally Counteract The Verbal Assault In Your Own Ears With Praise And Positivity.
  7. Phone A Friend Or Go To A Home Team.

  • The Enemy’s Words Are Only Dangerous To Me If I Receive Them.
  • Words That I Allow To Come Unchallenged Into My Mind Become A Permanent Interior Virus And Degrade My Life.
  • Good People Can Unintentionally Be Carriers Of Destructive Word Bombs.  (Jesus And Peter)
  • The Closer You Are To Someone The Deeper Their “Word Impact” Will Be.
  • If You Want To Change Your Life, You Have To Change Your Confession:  What You Hear And Say.

About Pastor David Rathel

My wife, Melanie, and I moved back to Columbus with our two week old little girl, Hannah, after finishing Graduate School in Fort Worth, Texas in 2001. RiverTown Church was born in a movie theater on September 9th that same year with a vision to be “a church for people who don’t go to church” here in our hometown. God has blessed us since then with a great location on Schomburg Rd. near my old neighborhood and High School. New people are coming to RiverTown all the time and discovering that God can “transform their lives into the likeness of Jesus Christ” through a church family where you can Believe, Belong, and Become!

From our first prayer meetings in a living room in nearby Phenix City, to our preview services and grand opening the Hollywood Connection movie theater, and finally to our current property and buildings on Schomburg Rd. God has led us all the way.

My wife and I both grew up here, so we know the people and love it here. Melanie keeps me going! We’ve been through all the good, the bad, and the ugly of life and have found that everything is sweeter together. You’ll never find us at a church event on a Friday night. We’ve had date night on Fridays since my first day as a Pastor. We met while working together in a Franklin Graham evangelistic crusade here in Columbus in 1996. Our second child is named Graham for that very reason! Our first child, Hannah, was born in Forth Worth just before we finished Seminary in 2001. Two weeks after she was born in Fort Worth, we were on the road back to Columbus to knock on doors and start RiverTown. She and the church will always be the same age!

On this blog, you'll be the first to know what God is teaching me and teaching through me to our church family. We'll laugh together and sometimes cry together. Most of all, you'll be challenged to take your next step in following Jesus Christ.
