“Reasons Not To Serve Jesus” – Sunday October 13

October 10, 2013 by Pastor David Rathel

What Kind Of Master Is Jesus?

“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?  Luke 6:46

LORD JESUS!  You’ve either said these sacred words yourself, or you’ve heard somebody else say them.  But have you ever stopped to think: ”Why DO you we call Him ‘Lord’ and then NOT DO what He tells us?”  That’s Jesus’s question in Luke 6:46.  It’s a legitimate question and it deserves a legitimate answer.  This October at RiverTown, we’re going to take some time to get to the bottom of our LORD’S question.

So, I took some time think about some of the excuses in my own life.

Because I Wanted To Obey When I Answered.

Because It Doesn’t Fit In To My Current Direction.

Because I’m Afraid.

Because I’m Proud.

Because I’m Ashamed.

Because I’m Comfortable.

Because I’m Tired.

Because I’ll Be Bored.

Because I Don’t Really Trust God.

Because I Don’t Have The Resources.

Because I Want To Figure It Out Myself.

Because I Will Fail Again.

Because I Just Want Him To Do It For Me.

Because I’m Not Desperate Enough To Change.

Because I Want To Protect Myself.

Because I’ve Been Hurt Following God.

Because God Hasn’t Answered My Prayers.

Because I Want To Please Somebody Else.

Because I Love Other Things More.

Because I’m Not Sure What He Wants From Me.

Because I Don’t Know Enough of The Bible.

Because I Don’t Recognize His Voice.

Because I’m Really My Own Master.

Are any of your excuses in this list?

The point this Sunday is that Jesus is the Kind of Master that Serves YOU!   The biggest help I have ever found to change my mind about serving Christ as my MASTER is to realize this important point:

“It Serves Me To Serve My MASTER.”

I Can’t wait to share with you this Sunday how this truth will PERMANENTLY CHANGE your WALK with CHRIST!

The secret behind it is in becoming what the Bible calls a BOND SERVANT.

In Christ, Pastor David Rathel

About Pastor David Rathel

My wife, Melanie, and I moved back to Columbus with our two week old little girl, Hannah, after finishing Graduate School in Fort Worth, Texas in 2001. RiverTown Church was born in a movie theater on September 9th that same year with a vision to be “a church for people who don’t go to church” here in our hometown. God has blessed us since then with a great location on Schomburg Rd. near my old neighborhood and High School. New people are coming to RiverTown all the time and discovering that God can “transform their lives into the likeness of Jesus Christ” through a church family where you can Believe, Belong, and Become!

From our first prayer meetings in a living room in nearby Phenix City, to our preview services and grand opening the Hollywood Connection movie theater, and finally to our current property and buildings on Schomburg Rd. God has led us all the way.

My wife and I both grew up here, so we know the people and love it here. Melanie keeps me going! We’ve been through all the good, the bad, and the ugly of life and have found that everything is sweeter together. You’ll never find us at a church event on a Friday night. We’ve had date night on Fridays since my first day as a Pastor. We met while working together in a Franklin Graham evangelistic crusade here in Columbus in 1996. Our second child is named Graham for that very reason! Our first child, Hannah, was born in Forth Worth just before we finished Seminary in 2001. Two weeks after she was born in Fort Worth, we were on the road back to Columbus to knock on doors and start RiverTown. She and the church will always be the same age!

On this blog, you'll be the first to know what God is teaching me and teaching through me to our church family. We'll laugh together and sometimes cry together. Most of all, you'll be challenged to take your next step in following Jesus Christ.
