Starts, Steps, and Stumbles – Five Financial Faith Stages For Christians.

July 13, 2016 by Pastor David Rathel

Dear RiverTown Family,

The Time Has Come..! Your official 2016, second-quarter, mid-summer, financial update and giving statement is ready!

If you have contributed to the ministry of RiverTown Church any time in the last three months, then you should receive it in the mail this week. If not, then please contact our office and we’ll make sure you get it right away. It is important to us that our records are correct. Please take a few moments and check it for accuracy. Every gift is valuable, appreciated, and needed to fund God’s work – Especially throughout the Summer!

You may not know this, but Pastors and church leaders often tread through the summer months with more than a little concern about inconsistent finances. In fact, a pastor from the northeast called me just yesterday. He was one of 32 amazing men of God selected to travel together on my recent trip to Israel. This is his first summer pastoring a new church plant. The conversation brought back so many memories of times when RiverTown members struggled to tithe consistently over the summer months.

Here’s the truth that has made each summer tithing season at RiverTown less fearful and more faith-filled. “Summer is PREDICTABLE, but people are POWERFUL! Over time God always raises up within every church family those people who put Him first in their tithes and offerings, no matter what season of the year it is.”

The conversation with my new pastor friend made me even more grateful for the years you and I have walked together. I also began to think about how the process of developing financial faithfulness in tithing works inside a church family. We should all be growing and finding more and more freedom financially. We are all on the path of learning to trust God completely when it comes to money.

So, today I wanted to take some time and simply describe the growth stages I have seen and the places people get stuck. I hope you can identify where you are and what God’s next step should be in your life. We all need encouragement and God’s power on the path of learning to crawl, walk, and run toward the goal of becoming faithful tithing disciples of Christ!

1. Long Term Tithers: You have seen again and again that God is able to provide a better, fuller, and more satisfying life for you and your family when you live exclusively on 90% of your God-given income instead of 100%. You still celebrate every time God miraculously provides more of what you really need even though you return His tithe to Him off the top of all your increase. Walking with God through tithing is normal for you and now you’re yearning to run!

2. New Nervous Tithers: Like a toddler learning to walk in our TykeTown preschool, you’ve just now learned how to stand up before your Father. You’ve taken your first tithing steps the last few times you received your earnings. You really gave a full 10%. But, your tithing legs get tired after a few steps and your (bank) balance easily falters. It’s hard, but you know down deep in your heart that you were never meant to stay on the floor or be carried by other people’s gifts.

3. Trying To Tithe: Every single month you pray and tell yourself, “Next month I’m going to do it. I promise you God! I know I need to do it and I really want to, but something always gets in the way. I give what I can Lord, but 10% is a lot! Besides, I’m honestly just waiting on you to convince my wife (or my husband). I’m really trying!”  The only problem with trying is that it’s not the same as trusting. It takes a lot of faith and trust for a little child to take his first step. Most of us would have never done it without complete trust that our mother or father would catch us if we fall. You’ll never do it while looking down at the floor. The best thing you can do is to lock eyes with your heavenly father, hold on to him with both hands, and take that first step!

4. Regular Contributors: You give out of your resources every time you come to church. You would never think of letting the offering basket go by without giving. You regularly donate $10, $20, even $50! As your pastor I just want to say that every gift matters and every giver matters. You have begun to crawl in your movement toward tithing and as the saying goes, “You’ve got to crawl before you can walk!” Your only need is to search out the big blessing of tithing for yourself. You can honestly ask God to show you the truth and give you the strength to stand up and take his hand. Then, you’ll be well on your way toward that first big step of faith when you give your full tithe!

5. Avoiding The Subject: You simply avoid the subject. You may have even avoided reading the other growth stages above and found yourself here first. Most likely you are either protecting what you have earned, or you have a lot of pain and fear in every situation that involves money. You may have a long list of reasons inside your head about why you and others don’t tithe. You could have been taught wrongly that tithing is not for today, or you could have a secret distrust of church leaders. My message to you is that God wants to heal your heart. Your pain, fear, distrust, or lack of funds is not God’s will! It was never his will for you to be hurt and lacking in this area. God loves you and is not angry with you about your desire to avoid this subject. However, like a loving father who wants the best for his children, He longs for you to climb out of the financial baby crib. You serve a God who loves you enough to never leave you alone about tithing. He doesn’t want to extract tithing from you. He knows that you’ll never find your financial future with Christ if fear prevents you from taking your first step.

Our loving Father’s desire is to give us the practice of tithing as a gift. He wants tithing FOR me, not FROM me. He longs for all His children to live the rich experience of giving AND receiving. This Summer, through HIS power, You can crawl. You can walk. And, you can RUN!

GOD UP CLOSE – Message Series

July 6, 2016 by Pastor David Rathel

God Up Close Lo-Res

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

The moment I captured this image of the dawn’s golden sun breaking through clouds over the Sea of Galilee was more powerful than I could ever describe. But, I’m certainly going to try in the weeks ahead. There’s no doubt that I experienced “God Up Close!”

I am overwhelmed and ready to share the depth of my dynamic experiences with the real presence of Jesus in the land of Israel.

This Sunday Morning, July 10th at 9:30 and 11:00, I will begin a message series inspired by my recent travels to Israel. What would it be like to walk in Jesus’ footsteps? What would it be like to see GOD UP CLOSE?

See You Sunday,

Pastor David

FAVOR – More Than You Asked For. Better Than What You Wanted.

May 12, 2016 by Pastor David Rathel

WHEN GOD DOESN’T GIVE YOU WHAT YOU WANT, IT’S BECAUSE HE PLANS TO GIVE YOU MORE THAN YOU WANT!

New Message Series Starting This Sunday, May 15th, At RiverTown Church. – By Pastor David Rathel

Have You Ever Noticed This Pattern?

When It’s Not Right – God Says NO!

When You’re Not Right – God Says GROW!

When The Time Is Not Right – God Says SLOW!

But, When It’s Right, You’re Right, And The Time Is Right – God Says GO!

The FAVOR OF GOD is the guarantee of His presence and the provision of His power to accomplish His special purpose in and through your life.

This Sunday Morning at RiverTown, we’ll begin a brand new message series that will help you understand the FAVOR of God.  There are uniquely chosen times, places, and people that God selects for his special attention.   This message series will help you understand when and how you can personally walk in God’s favor.

We’ll take a tour each week through Bible characters who were favored by God.  Abraham, Moses, Deborah, Ruth, Mary, and John the disciple are just some of the many men and women in the Bible who obtained Favor from God.  The Favor of God is never fair.  It’s better than fair.  The best way for you to expand God’s favor in your life is to recognize where you already have it.  It’s time to find your Favor!

SUPERNATURAL – More than who you are, More than what you’ve seen, Sunday Feb. 21

February 19, 2016 by Pastor David Rathel

supernatural-header

Dear RiverTown Family,

The Bible and even subsequent church History is full of ordinary people who become more than they are and experience more than they have ever seen of God’s supernatural power.  His power is not dead today.  Even now, around the world, God’s people are experiencing supernatural miracles.  God’s supernatural works in and through His people serve to display His love and longing for intimacy with His sons and daughters.

Starting this Sunday at RiverTown, we will begin the process of moving past the natural things we can do and into the supernatural gifts of God for our own lives, families, and church.

It’s not going to be easy. It might even get messy. But, I am certain that this is the time and RiverTown Church is the place for God’s outpouring of supernatural love and life.

EVERY SUNDAY.

1. We will offer the Body and Blood of Christ represented in communion to all who desire to receive.

2. We will offer prayer for people to be emptied of self and filled with God’s Spirit.

3. We will ask God to give us new supernatural Gifts to be used to extend His kingdom.

4. We will pray and believe God for physical healing for our members.

Desperation and risk-taking faith are the essential ingredients. God wants every one of us to become more than we are and experience more than we’ve seen. His supernatural power can transform us into supernatural people who are given wholly to His service.

See You Sunday,

Pastor David Rathel

Superbowl Champions Share How Jesus Christ Healed Their Bodies And Changed Their Lives Forever, Sunday Morning February 7th Is Football Sunday!

February 6, 2016 by Pastor David Rathel

Football_Sunday_2016_FBS_Facebook2Dear RiverTown Family,

Tomorrow morning, February 7th, at RiverTown Church you’ll hear stories of faith, healing, and the power of God from N.F.L. Superbowl Champions. On Superbowl Sunday Morning, at our 9:30 and 11:00 worship services, we will dedicate the entire message to exclusive interviews with professional football players like Drew Brees, Thomas Davis, and Trent Dilfer.

The RiverTown Worship Center will debut this event on four new big-screens. More than 1200 churches participated in the inaugural event last year. Now, we are excited to be the only church in Columbus registered with www.footballsunday.com to make this outreach event available in our community. Join our church family Sunday morning to welcome these men as they share their faith in Christ and victory of life’s injuries and obstacles. As a Pastor, I can’t think of a better way to invite a friend or family member to be included in God’s family.  Bring someone with you to be inspired towards faith by these names and faces they already know.

See You Sunday Morning,

Pastor David Rathel

Did You Forget Something? Sunday, January 24th

January 19, 2016 by Pastor David Rathel

didyouforgettotellmesomethingboyfist

One United States Airforce Study found that people remember 20 percent of what they hear, 75 percent of what they see done, and 90 percent of what they do themselves. A big problem that most of us face in our relationship with God is that the knowledge we gain from reading the Bible or going to Church gets forgotten because it falls into the wrong category. We only remember, at most, 20% of the things God is using to mold us into His image because they are only heard. The lessons we will remember are the ones we see lived by others and the ones we put into practice ourselves.

The next two Sundays at RiverTown will be days that will help you REMEMBER NOT TO FORGET what God is doing in your life! You’ll have the opportunity to get off the side streets of forgetfulness and take the on-ramp to the highway of seeing and doing.

This Sunday, January 24th, is our next HOME TEAM KICK-OFF. Getting together on a regular basis with like-minded people to learn and discuss God’s word allows you to see someone else demonstrate spiritual growth. Seeing what someone else is going through can actually bring you up to a 75% memory factor. Wow! Some home teams will be following the My One Word study curriculum and DVD series while other teams will be continuing studies from last semester. Click the link below to find out what each home team will be studying as well as when and where each one will meet this semester.

Home Teams

Next Sunday, January 31st, is My One Word ALTAR DAY. You just might take your learning curve all the way up to 90% and beyond. It’s time to DO SOMETHING about your OWN FAITH that you’ll never forget. ALTAR DAY is the culmination of the MY ONE WORD movement God has been doing in our hearts, minds, and lives. I’ll share all about it in my message this week.

“THE ICEBERG AND THE PIÑATA” is the title of the message God’s has given me to share this Sunday as part four in the MY ONE WORD sermon series. God has been moving in our church family during this message series by giving each person just one word from Him to carve our character throughout all of 2016. We’ve all got to decide if we want to simply seek the spiritual sugar high from a hollow Piñata or become an Iceberg with character deep beneath the surface. If that piques your interest, then click HERE, for a preview copy of my preaching notes for this coming Sunday.

Instructions For Finding Your ONE WORD From God 2016.

  • Get Specific:
    • What kind of person do you hope to be by the end of 2016?
    • Describe the characteristics of that person and the condition of their heart!
    • Write every word down.  Group and order them.
  • Resist Regret:
    • This year’s new resolutions are often last year’s regrets
    • Don’t just promise not to be what you’ve always been.
  • Stay Future Focused:
    • Stay focused on the vision of the person you believe God is calling you to be.
    • Create your list and narrow down that list into your One Word for 2016.

Preparing For ALTAR DAY:

  • Sunday January, 31st – A church-wide demonstration day for every person’s MY ONE WORD and ALTAR SYMBOL.
  • “ASK and you will RECEIVE”: Ask God For A Physical Symbol To Demonstrate Your One Word’s Meaning.
  • It may be a candle, a painting, a prayer cloth, a flask of oil, a special Bible, a cross, a compass, etc.
  • Your altar symbol can be anything that represents and gives personal meaning to your one word from God.
  • “Every Movement Has A Symbol. Find Yours!”

Learn everthing you need to know about My One Word from the recent Sunday message videos on my YouTube Channel www.youtube.com/davidrathelchannel and from www.MyOneWord.org

What Do You And ‘Galileo’ Have In Common?

January 15, 2016 by Pastor David Rathel

In 1609, Galileo Galilei first arraigned a series of new lenses to look through heavens. Galileo worked with his new lenses until he developed a telescope that magnified objects up to 30 times. Because of the right lens, his eye was the first to see craters on the Moon, view the phases of Venus, and see all four orbiting moons of Jupiter which now bare his name.

Just Think. Since eternity past, these amazingly beautiful cosmic wonders were for God’s eyes only. From the moment God uttered the words “LET THERE BE LIGHT…” no human soul saw anything more than specks of light across the night sky. Then, Galileo Galilei! God, then Galileo…  His sight was second only to God’s.  ALL BECAUSE OF THE RIGHT LENS!

Looking in the right direction didn’t help him. Staring longer didn’t help. Squinting didn’t help. Watching during different times of the day didn’t work. Asking his friends what they saw yielded no new answers. No luck. No how. No way. No sight. No sense. No vision. No difference. Not even once!

The truth is that most people try absolutely everything EXCEPT looking through GOD’S LENS for the LIFE THEY NEED!

What do you and Galileo have in common? You both need a NEW LENS.

This Sunday at RiverTown, I’m going to show you how to receive A ONE WORD LENS from God’s word that will TRUMP EVERY RESOLUTION PROMISE you’ve every made.

But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man. The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9

See You Sunday,

Pastor David Rathel

Can A Family’s Black Sheep Have A White Christmas? Sunday December 6th.

December 4, 2015 by Pastor David Rathel

“Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told to them concerning this Child. And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds.” Luke 2:17-18

Have you ever wondered why God’s choice of the first to know about the Christ Child’s birth on Christmas morning were the poor shepherds of Bethlehem?

The divine irony of the Angel’s invitation is that Shepherds, at the time of Jesus, were the Black Sheep of society. They were homeless, dirty, smelly, uneducated, and unwanted men who toiled alone without families to care for them. If you had a friend or family member who was a shepherd, you certainly wouldn’t invite him to your house on Christmas day as the honored guest for the divine birth of your first-born son.

But that’s exactly what God did!  My message this Sunday at RiverTown will uncover God’s reason for placing “shepherds who were black sheep” at the front of the line to meet Jesus.

2015 BUDGET BLAST

Our year-end Christmas giving campaign is going to be the most exciting and practical opportunity we have ever offered. You’ll be able to bless both with RiverTown and a third-world Shepherd at the same time.  As a church family, we are only $14,000 behind in our year-to-date budgeted tithes from church members.  For every $1,000 we give together toward meeting our budget goal, Samaritan’s Purse International will receive the money to provide a wool-bearing sheep and train families how to care for their flocks in a third world environment. Our goal is to give at least 14 sheep through this Christmas effort.

CHRISTMAS EVE

We’ve just confirmed that the Johnathan and Lisa Moore band and guest speaker Rev. David Howle will be our guests for our candle-light Christmas Eve service at 7pm.

Merry Christmas,

Pastor David Rathel

#PrayForParis #PrayForMe

November 14, 2015 by Pastor David Rathel

HeartJeSuisParis

‪#‎PrayForParis #PrayForMe‬  – Sunday Morning November 15th

‪#‎JeSuisParis‬  ‪#‎JesusParis‬

At first glance to my english-reading eyes, #JeSuisParis and #JesusParis look miraculously identical.

I needed to discover these words tonight. I had an emotion without a meaning; A feeling without a phrase to set it free! This word play isn’t play at all, but a revelation to the calloused part of my heart that has trouble digesting yet another terrorist attack.

“Je Suis Paris” means “I AM PARIS” in the beautiful language of the French people and their capital.

It was originally the call to arms “Je Suis Charlie!” It was used as a slogan and a logo created by French art director Joachim Roncin and adopted by supporters of freedom of speech and freedom of the press after the 7 January 2015 massacre in which twelve people were killed at the offices of the French satirical weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo. It identifies a speaker or supporter with those who were killed at the Charlie Hebdo shooting. (Wikipedia)

On the night of the attacks, I felt what others are feeling: “Paris Is Too Much!” The blood, carnage, and pitiful disgrace of this senseless act of evil, religious hatred is simply too much. My mind and heart have been churning the same words over and over again:

I Am Angry!
I Need Jesus!
Paris Needs Jesus!
Jesus Is Paris!
I AM PARIS!

At the beginning of World War II, the terrible reign of Hitler’s Third Reich trampled the French nation in terror. Images of the black Nazi Swastika looming on giant red flags draping the Arc De Triomphe were emblazoned in the minds of our grandparents generation. The same satanic spirit that inhabited the Nazis and led them to ravage Paris and all of Europe is on the rise again. This evil spirit’s human work is being done under a different religious deception and a new terrorist name, but it’s brutal anti-christ nature is all too familiar.

There is something about attacking a city as historic, alluring and beautiful as Paris that strengthens worldwide resolve. France played a great part in supporting the American Revolution and is our oldest ally. Near the end of the 18th century, events in the streets of Paris were the original seedbed of revolutionary democracy in Europe. France gave America The Stature Of Liberty in honor of our shared democratic ideals and revolutionary spirit. We have a lot of reasons to say #JeSuisParis, or #IAMPARIS!

The good news we treasure as Christians is that every time the nations have truly united to fight tyranny and and seek the Face Of God – HE HAS DELIVERED US!

Jesus loves Paris. As we weep over this loss and destruction, let us never lose sight of Christ our Messiah saving up every tear and adding his own. The Christian faith has always been the faith of desperate people throughout the ages. The power of Jesus is the power of a heroic redeemer who sets his people free from tyranny, terror, evil, sin, and the grave.

Jesus wants to be accepted as the great warrior and protector that the Parisienns and people everywhere long for. He laid down His life for you so He could become the love of our lives. May all of us see the terror alive in our world and turn our hearts to Jesus Christ as our leader in love and hero in battle!

Join us tomorrow morning at RiverTown Church as we look into the word of God for His power and hope in times of danger and fear.

Pastor David Rathel.
