Can A Family’s Black Sheep Have A White Christmas? Sunday December 6th.

December 4, 2015 by Pastor David Rathel

Am Wochenende wurde ein Rind aus dem 1012 Tiere umfassenden Bestand des Betriebes positiv auf BSE getestet. Am Mittwoch (24.01.01) wird das Ergebnis aus Tuebingen erwartet. “Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told to them concerning this Child. And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds.” Luke 2:17-18

Have you ever wondered why God’s choice of the first to know about the Christ Child’s birth on Christmas morning were the poor shepherds of Bethlehem?

The divine irony of the Angel’s invitation is that Shepherds, at the time of Jesus, were the Black Sheep of society. They were homeless, dirty, smelly, uneducated, and unwanted men who toiled alone without families to care for them. If you had a friend or family member who was a shepherd, you certainly wouldn’t invite him to your house on Christmas day as the honored guest for the divine birth of your first-born son.

But that’s exactly what God did!  My message this Sunday at RiverTown will uncover God’s reason for placing “shepherds who were black sheep” at the front of the line to meet Jesus.

2015 BUDGET BLAST

Our year-end Christmas giving campaign is going to be the most exciting and practical opportunity we have ever offered. You’ll be able to bless both with RiverTown and a third-world Shepherd at the same time.  As a church family, we are only $14,000 behind in our year-to-date budgeted tithes from church members.  For every $1,000 we give together toward meeting our budget goal, Samaritan’s Purse International will receive the money to provide a wool-bearing sheep and train families how to care for their flocks in a third world environment. Our goal is to give at least 14 sheep through this Christmas effort.

CHRISTMAS EVE

We’ve just confirmed that the Johnathan and Lisa Moore band and guest speaker Rev. David Howle will be our guests for our candle-light Christmas Eve service at 7pm.

Merry Christmas,

Pastor David Rathel

About Pastor David Rathel

My wife, Melanie, and I moved back to Columbus with our two week old little girl, Hannah, after finishing Graduate School in Fort Worth, Texas in 2001. RiverTown Church was born in a movie theater on September 9th that same year with a vision to be “a church for people who don’t go to church” here in our hometown. God has blessed us since then with a great location on Schomburg Rd. near my old neighborhood and High School. New people are coming to RiverTown all the time and discovering that God can “transform their lives into the likeness of Jesus Christ” through a church family where you can Believe, Belong, and Become!

From our first prayer meetings in a living room in nearby Phenix City, to our preview services and grand opening the Hollywood Connection movie theater, and finally to our current property and buildings on Schomburg Rd. God has led us all the way.

My wife and I both grew up here, so we know the people and love it here. Melanie keeps me going! We’ve been through all the good, the bad, and the ugly of life and have found that everything is sweeter together. You’ll never find us at a church event on a Friday night. We’ve had date night on Fridays since my first day as a Pastor. We met while working together in a Franklin Graham evangelistic crusade here in Columbus in 1996. Our second child is named Graham for that very reason! Our first child, Hannah, was born in Forth Worth just before we finished Seminary in 2001. Two weeks after she was born in Fort Worth, we were on the road back to Columbus to knock on doors and start RiverTown. She and the church will always be the same age!

On this blog, you'll be the first to know what God is teaching me and teaching through me to our church family. We'll laugh together and sometimes cry together. Most of all, you'll be challenged to take your next step in following Jesus Christ.
